Custom PC3 & PC4 Containment Solutions for Peter Doherty Institute

Airepure provides custom containment solutions to the various PC3 and PC4 rated facilities at Peter Doherty Institute.

Peter Doherty Institute for Infection & Immunity

The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity is a joint venture between the University of Melbourne and the Royal Melbourne Hospital, combining research, teaching, public health and reference laboratory services, diagnostic services and clinical care in infection diseases and immunity.

Located in Melbourne, this state-of the-art bio-medical institute accommodates some 700 expert scientists, researchers, clinicians, academics, staff and students. Designed as a key asset in the fight with infectious diseases in Austral-Asia; the Peter Doherty Institute researches viral infectious diseases (HIV, viral hepatitis, influenza and dengue fever), host-pathogen interactions (malaria, tuberculosis and enteric infections), as well as antimicrobial resistance and healthcare associated infections.

Equipment Supplied

  • Flanders CSC twin pass HEPA containment housings complete with bubble tight isolation dampers for PC4 rated laboratories.
  • Flanders CSC single pass HEPA containment housings complete with bubble tight isolation dampers for PC3 rated laboratories.
  • Custom exhaust air terminal HEPA filter modules.
  • Stainless steel mesh insect screens and AirePak multi pocket filters, housed in custom built combination frames.
  • AirePleat and V-form panel filters.

Special Considerations

Highly regulated and technical requirements are inherent to support research laboratories in this area. Allowing safe, contamination free air flow and open working spaces that encourage collegiate collaborations are significant challenges. Fine thermal and humidity control is crucial to these operations.   Energy efficiency for these classes of buildings is also of special concern with Doherty achieving a 5 Star Green – education Design V1 rating.

Flanders CSC containment housings were selected for use in various PC3 / PC4 rated laboratories where dangerous airborne particles must be prevented from entering the atmosphere. These systems were supplied complete with pre filters, HEPA filters and bubble tight isolation dampers. Bubble tight isolation dampers are typically used within an air filtration system for the effective shut off and isolation of areas or system components for fumigation and decontamination and to facilitate the filter change-out process.

Custom ceiling mounted exhaust air terminal HEPA filter modules, complete with HEPA filters, isolation dampers, fascia and diffusers were selected for the various commercial air handling units (AHU’s) around the facility. Ceiling mounted modules designed specifically for PC3 / PC4 rated laboratories and cleanrooms were supplied complete with HEPA filters, panel filters, 250µ insect screens, balance isolation dampers, fascia, diffuser screens and access panel for exhaust HEPA testing.

Stainless steel mesh insect screens and AirePak multi pocket filters, housed in custom built combination frames were also supplied. Stainless steel insect screens are typically used as a biosecurity measure in the HVAC systems of AQIS regulated facilities or laboratory spaces to provide a barrier against the migration of insects either into or out of a controlled space.

AirePleat high capacity G4 rated panel filters and V-form panel filters have also been supplied to service the multiple commercial air handling units (AHU’s) around the facility.
